Whatever your skill… volunteer

I’m delighted to be working with the lovely people at Roxburgh & Berwickshire Citizens Advice Bureau!
The brief for my first project was to design a poster to challenge the misconception that CAB is only interested in volunteers who want to become advisers, and to encourage people with a wide variety of skills to get involved.
The circle of tools is designed to represent a wide variety of professions and skills, and resonate with as many people as possible. The use of a circle echoes CAB’s logo and feels inclusive, whilst the placement and orientation of the image of a pencil adds an additional fun nod to the vertical bar within the logo.
Citizens Advice publish design guidelines to help ensure that all their publications are consistent in style and quality, and are in keeping with their brand. For this design I used Pantone 293 (blue) and 116 (yellow) – their two primary brand colours, and their corporate typeface which is Frutiger.
This poster needed to be eye-catching to work on crowded noticeboards, so I chose to use yellow as the background colour, which makes the whole design bright. For large type the blue provides sufficient emphasis and contrast to the yellow background to ensure legibility, but the smaller copy needed to be black to make sure it remained readable.
