A Compositor’s Christmas Message

Monday 15 December 2014

With only ten days to go until Christmas and with sleigh bells ringing in the distance, we’re starting to feel festive at lettica!

I’ve typeset my Christmas message in 12pt Bembo so each of the letters are just 3mm high. If you’d like to see the video a little larger, or if the video above isn’t working you can watch A Compositor’s Christmas Message on vimeo.

Upside down & back to front!

A compositor is the person who typesets, or assembles, all the text for letterpress printing – one letter at a time.

Typesetting is always done with each letter reading upside down and back to front. It’s upside down so that the next line can be placed next to the bottom of the first line, and back to front so that when the whole thing is printed onto the paper the resulting image is the right way round.

So with my compositor’s hat on it seems only right that I should wish you all an upside down and back to front Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
