Annual report for the OPCCN

Brief

The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk asked me to design their annual report for 2020/21. The report would be published as a PDF, so needed designing for home printing and reading from screen including via screen-reading technology such as JAWS and NVDA.

Response

The design has minimal ink coverage for home printing. Limited images, outlined shapes and carefully-chosen text elements bring colour into the design.

For accessibility, I adjusted colours from the client’s brand palette to achieve contrast levels that meet WCAG AAA standards and presented the text at a good size with a comfortable line length and open line spacing.

Because the report would predominantly be read on screen – and potentially by those using a screen magnifier – I worked with a largely single-column layout to make moving through the document easier.

Finally, I remediated the PDF to ensure PDF/UA compliance (ISO 14289).
